How we started:

In 2014, Nate began his journey in the aquarium world working at a local fish store in Davis, CA. Like many, he started with freshwater systems, but as his knowledge grew through research and customer conversations, he transitioned into the saltwater side of the hobby (a move many aquarists jokingly call a “beautiful mistake”).

His passion quickly grew, eventually leading him to manage Rivers to Reef—the premier aquarium store in Davis. Driven by a love for aquatic life, Nate went on to study Marine Biology at UC Santa Cruz, graduating in 2020. Soon after, he joined a biotech firm where he supported aquaculture research focused on developing and manufacturing fish vaccines. When that project was paused during COVID, Nate shifted gears and began working with UC Davis, contributing to aquaculture research on endangered fish species in California.

If it isn’t clear by now, Nate has a lifelong passion for fish and aquariums. He’s committed to combining hands-on experience with research-backed knowledge to ensure the best possible care for aquatic life.
