Live Phytoplankton (Isochrysis)

$14.99$180.00

Coral Hub’s live phytoplankton consists of a single species of Isochrysis. It is bottled each week and shipped with cold packs to ensure viability. The phytoplankton will last up to 3-4 weeks in the fridge with daily shaking or about 1-2 weeks at room temperature but varies depending on surrounding temp. The recommended dose is 20 ml per 100 gallons or 5ml per 25 gallons. Works great with corals, filter feeders, pods etc.

*Please note 32 oz is (2) 16 oz containers*

*Please note anything bigger than 32 oz is shipped in heat-sealed bags*

Isochrysis galbana is a species of microalgae, and it is often used in the context of coral reef aquaculture and marine ecology. While corals are primarily autotrophic, meaning they obtain energy through photosynthesis from the symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) living within their tissues, they can also benefit from the presence of other microalgae, like Isochrysis galbana. Here’s what Isochrysis galbana can provide for corals:

  1. Nutrient source: Isochrysis galbana is a nutritious microalgae that provides essential nutrients such as lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Corals can capture and ingest small particles from the water, including microalgae like Isochrysis, which can serve as a supplementary source of nutrients.
  2. Enhancing biodiversity: The presence of diverse microalgae, including Isochrysis galbana, can contribute to a diverse and stable coral reef ecosystem. A variety of microalgae can provide different nutritional benefits and support a broader range of marine life.
  3. Indirect support for zooxanthellae: While Isochrysis galbana is not a symbiotic partner like zooxanthellae, it can indirectly benefit corals by providing additional food sources for the zooxanthellae. This can potentially increase the photosynthetic activity of the coral, which, in turn, benefits the coral host.
  4. Resilience and recovery: In the face of stressors such as bleaching events, corals that have access to a diverse diet, including various microalgae like Isochrysis galbana, may have an increased chance of survival and recovery. This diversity of food sources can help sustain coral health when primary sources of nutrition (zooxanthellae) are compromised.

It’s worth noting that the specific effects of Isochrysis galbana on corals may vary depending on environmental conditions, the health of the coral colony, and the overall nutrient availability in the reef ecosystem. Additionally, in a controlled aquaculture setting, microalgae like Isochrysis galbana can be used as part of a targeted feeding regimen to promote the health and growth of captive corals.
