Live Phytoplankton (Tetraselmis)

$14.99$180.00

Coral Hub’s live phytoplankton consists of a single species of Tetraselmis. It is bottled each week and shipped with cold packs to ensure viability. The phytoplankton will last up to 3-4 weeks in the fridge with daily shaking or about 1-2 weeks at room temperature but varies depending on surrounding temp. The recommended dose is 20 ml per 100 gallons or 5ml per 25 gallons. Works great with corals, filter feeders, pods etc.

*Please note anything bigger than 32 oz is shipped in heat-sealed bags*

Tetraselmis phytoplankton can provide several benefits when used in a reef aquarium as part of a balanced and well-managed approach to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Here are some potential benefits of using Tetraselmis phytoplankton in a reef aquarium:

Nutrient Source for Filter Feeders: Many reef aquarium inhabitants, such as corals, clams, and certain types of invertebrates, are filter feeders that rely on small particles suspended in the water for nutrition. Tetraselmis phytoplankton serves as a natural and nutritious food source for these organisms, supporting their growth and overall health.

Promotes Zooplankton Growth: Zooplankton are microscopic animals that are essential for the diet of various marine organisms in a reef aquarium, including small fish and coral larvae. By introducing Tetraselmis phytoplankton, you can help stimulate the growth of zooplankton populations, creating a more natural and diverse food chain within the aquarium.

Enhances Water Quality: Phytoplankton, including Tetraselmis, can help improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates. By consuming these nutrients, the phytoplankton can contribute to reducing the likelihood of algae blooms and maintaining clearer, healthier water conditions.

Supports Photosynthesis: Just as land plants utilize carbon dioxide and produce oxygen through photosynthesis, phytoplankton in the aquarium also perform photosynthesis, helping to increase oxygen levels and decrease carbon dioxide concentrations in the water.

Natural Pigments and Nutrients: Tetraselmis phytoplankton contains various pigments, vitamins, and minerals that can contribute to the overall health and coloration of marine organisms in the aquarium. These nutrients are essential for maintaining vibrant and thriving corals and other inhabitants.

Stimulates Natural Behaviors: Introducing phytoplankton into the aquarium can encourage natural behaviors in certain organisms, such as the feeding responses of filter-feeding corals. This can lead to increased activity and interaction, making the aquarium environment more dynamic and engaging.

Reduces Competition with Macroalgae: In some reef aquariums, unwanted macroalgae growth can be a concern. Providing a consistent source of phytoplankton as a food supplement can help direct the nutritional needs of organisms toward the phytoplankton, potentially reducing the nutrients available for macroalgae growth.

Mitigates Nutrient Imbalances: Reef aquariums are delicate ecosystems that require careful nutrient management. The introduction of Tetraselmis phytoplankton can contribute to balancing nutrient levels by consuming excess nutrients, which can aid in preventing nutrient imbalances that could negatively impact coral and fish health.

When using Tetraselmis phytoplankton or any other live food source in a reef aquarium, it’s important to maintain a proper balance and avoid overfeeding. Regular monitoring of water parameters and the reactions of the aquarium’s inhabitants is crucial to ensure that the introduction of phytoplankton
